the brief.

Migrate away from a troublesome bespoke platform to an SEO-first Shopify based system, with an advanced clothes personalisation interface, bespoke discount logic and back-office integration.

Looking to grow substantially in the upcoming year, Banana Moon approached us to redevelop their website before increasing their digital marketing spends.

Banana Moon had come a long way since their old bespoke website was built. Things had moved on and their needs had changed. Specifically they wanted a robust, modern, reliable platform, which would be SEO friendly and easy to work with, out of the box. We had no hesitation in recommending Shopify for this project.

With aspirations of growing their digital marketing spend, Banana Moon needed a website they could customise easily and maintain without too much technical support. They also wanted to dramatically improve their clothing customisation experience, going above and beyond what their competitors were offering.

challenges

Existing bespoke back-office systems

Must continue to operate with new frontend

Intricate clothes personalisation interface

Upload images, add text, all in an easy-to-use web UI

Search engine friendly, out-of-the-box

No weird page loading mechanisms

our approach.

One of our first tasks was researching existing Shopify themes and finding one which would be a good fit for the Banana Moon brand, and the required functionality. This is something we like to involve clients in quite heavily, so it’s good to get the ball rolling soon on it.

Next up was product and data migration. We knew this would be a big task so we wanted to get started on this early too. It was at this point that we started to learn more about the existing back-office systems, with help from their internal development team.

By this stage, main pieces of work were now well through the planning phases. The two large problems to tackle here were the clothing customisation interface, and the bulk discount logic. Both of these tasks involved extensive iterative development, working with many stakeholders at Banana Moon to make sure everything was perfect.

The bulk discount logic required the creation of a middleware to handle the calculations, and also the dynamic creation of the coupon codes used to implement the discounts in the checkout. We chose to use the Cloudflare stack for this, specifically Workers. We find this platform a great solution when a “serverless” API is needed. It’s cheap, reliable, and simple to use.

Following on from the initial launch of the website, we have worked on various new innovative solutions for a wide range of bespoke requirements that Banana Moon has. These innovations include a custom checkout solution, enhanced discount features, and a white-label fulfilment hub, enabling approved partners to sell Banana Moon-produced clothing directly through the platform.

Any sizeable migration like this always feels pretty daunting, but I’m delighted to have completed this project with Flaunt. They show top class problem-solving, professionalism, and communication at all times. It’s been great to see those green shoots of increasing revenue and traffic since the migration. Having made the jump, we know we can now push on in a more agile and fast-paced way, to implement our ambitious development roadmap with them as our partner.
